Brown corundum, brown fused alumina, is a highly resistant, angular mineral sandblasting abrasive that is ideal for cleaning and roughening metal parts in a wide range of applications.
Fused alumina is composed mainly of aluminium oxide, and is renowned for its very high hardness, which means it can be blasted many times. Corundum is therefore ideal and highly recommended for use in sandblasting cabinets, as it can be recycled and reused for maximum long-term performance.
What is alumina for sandblasting?
Corundum (alumina) for sandblasting is an abrasive used in impact surface treatment operations.
This abrasive medium is projected at high intensity, either by venturi effect, vacuum, or overpressure with the tank containing the abrasive being pressurized. It is widely used in shot blasting machines and compressed air sandblasters because its hardness allows it to be used in a closed circuit and projected in multiple passes through a boron carbide or tungsten nozzle.
It is essential to have a good extraction system within the machine because corundum generates a large amount of dust.
What are the diverse types of corundum?
Brown and white fused alumina differ in their chemical composition, hardness and applications.
Brown corundum contains traces of iron oxide, whereas white corundum does not, as it is produced from pure aluminium oxide. The greater hardness and lower friability of white corundum make it the abrasive of choice for specific applications.
For precision sandblasting and stripping of stainless steel, aluminium and delicate materials, white corundum is therefore recommended.
On the other hand, brown corundum contains impurities such as iron oxide, which gives it greater density and strength. It is often used for heavier applications, such as stripping robust surfaces or treating metal parts.

Characteristics of Brown Fused Alumina abrasive
Brown corundum is produced by melting high-purity bauxite and alumina at over 2,000°C in an electric arc furnace. The high level of titanium oxide (TiO2) gives it great strength and makes it easy to recycle.
Corundum is an aluminium oxide that is completely chemically neutral. Its low density means it can be used to process thin sheet metal without deformation, as it can be sprayed at low pressure.

Advantages of corundum for sandblasting operations
A highly resistant, angular mineral abrasive, brown corundum is often used in sandblasting cabinets.
Because of its angular shape, it can be used for stripping, deburring and roughening the surface of a workpiece, and can be used as a preparation before painting to create a bond, for stripping paint, removing rust, deburring workpieces and sanding easily before applying a coating .... This is the abrasive par excellence for stripping metal parts. In a manufacturing or machining workshop, there are many uses for this sandblasting abrasive.
This very hard aluminium oxide can be blasted a large number of times and is widely recommended for use in sandblasting cabinets. It is a long-lasting solution that makes it possible to recycle parts with traces of rust or oxidation, for example, because they will be reconditioned by this non-chemical treatment.
However, corundum is not necessarily recommended for finishing work; glass or ceramic beads are more useful in this case.

Safety precautions when using corundum
Corundum is a high-performance sandblasting abrasive, valued for its versatility and effectiveness. However, its use requires special care to ensure operator safety. Here are some recommendations for safe use*
Protect yourself from fine dust: Inhaling corundum particles is harmful to the operator's respiratory tract. To minimise risks, it is recommended that you wear an approved respirator capable of filtering fine particles, especially when loading and unloading the sandblaster. It may also be advisable to wear protective goggles to avoid eye irritation.
Wear suitable clothing: When using brown or white corundum for sandblasting, you can use heavy-duty gloves and protective clothing that completely covers the skin. This is a very rough abrasive, so it could abrade and irritate the operator's skin.
Work in a ventilated area and with a sandblaster equipped with an efficient suction and filtration system: Effective ventilation is essential to reduce the accumulation of dust in the air and in the cabin. In closed environments, opt for extraction and filtration systems to maintain optimal air quality. Basic machines with low-powered motor fans should be avoided, as during corundum sandblasting operations, the operator may not have good visibility due to the dust generated.
Handle and store with care: To avoid accidents, handle corundum with care to limit the dispersion of particles, especially on the floor. Store it in a dry place, away from moisture, to preserve its abrasive properties.
By applying these safety measures, you will optimise your performance while protecting operators and the environment. Corundum remains a reliable and durable solution for all your sandblasting needs, but its handling requires rigour and responsibility.
